Carat Weight

Diamonds are weighed in units called carats (not to be confused with karats, which are used for determining the purity and fineness of gold.) By definition, one carat is the equivalent of 200 milligrams.

Carats are subdivided into points, with a single carat comprising one hundred points. Therefore, a fifty-point diamond is the equivalent in weight of a half-carat (.50 ct.)

Carat Scale

A diamond’s carat size should not be considered in isolation when evaluating a stone. Two diamonds with the same weight may look quite different depending on each one’s individual shape and cut. Consequently, a finely cut diamond appears larger and more brilliant than a less skillfully cut stone weighing the same amount.
